The Haitian Diaspora in Development Workshop Series:
A Project Planning and Budgeting Skills Training
The Haitian Coalition of Somerville invites members of the Diaspora who want to help their community in Haiti to participate in The Haitian Diaspora in Development Workshop Series. The workshops will train you in basic project planning and budgeting skills so that you can run successful projects and promote positive and sustainable development in Haiti.
Over the course of 3 weeks, participants will learn critical skills in three areas including:
Focusing your organization:
Identify your organization’s vision for change and mission statement.
Learn how to develop a basic project budget, track spending and handle receipts.
Develop your project goals, objectives, activities and indicators as well as a monitoring and evaluation plan.
Acquire tools to assess community needs and develop appropriate and realistic responses.
Gain fluency in critical concepts of community participation, gender equity and sustainability.
By the end of the program, students will have a basic project plan and budget and will be better prepared to raise funds to support your work.
Who is eligible to participate? All members of the Haitian Diaspora who aspire to implement development projects in Haiti. Space is limited to 15.
When are the workshops held? The workshops will be held on the first 3 Saturdays of March, (3/3, 3/10/3/17) from 10am-2pm.

The workshops will be based on Mercy Corps’ Localizing Institutional Development in Sudan, (LINCS) and the materials will be adapted to respond to the Haitian context. The workshops will be run by Connie Barker of African Community and Economic Development of New England.
Mercy Corps is an international relief and development organization that works in more than 40 different countries to help people overcome the odds of poverty, conflict and disaster and create secure, productive and just communities. Mercy Corps has worked in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake and promotes long term development through economic, agricultural and youth development programming in both Port-au-Prince and rural communities in the Central Plateau and the Lower Artibone Valley.
